Digital shop floor management or MES instead of Industry 4.0?

Industry 4.0 is all the rage, but everyone seems to forget that standards form the basis for Industry 4.0. Having standards in all interfaces, from plants, machines and equipment to software, and indicators of the processes in the software means that everything has to be retrofitted for a lot of money, and in the case of new acquisitions, that these specifications have to be in the specification sheets as must-haves.

This can feel like reaching for the stars.

If it is possible to go back one step, it would be helpful to be able to integrate all the information you currently have into a databank, so that it is available through a dashboard for assessment purposes. This is currently possible, and represents a useful interim step between “very little”, an “affordable solution”, and Industry 4.0.  In addition to digitalisation, who does what with the data is crucial, as is establishing the added value with respect to customers and the business. What savings need to be made so that the investments are worthwhile?

This diagram is based on an actual project. The data is collected from three lines on x stations, it is then personally filtered and then at some point, it is redirected, or not. Data and new data that is collected through digitalisation can help reduce the number of “desk personnel”, which can be calculated against the cost of the entire system. It paid off in the end.

With such a system, unfiltered information/facts and data are provided for decision making and decisions can be made promptly (>1h).
